Went from S4 to M3, comments (long)...don't worry, no S4 bashing here
Hello all, I sold my beloved S4 to a member of this forum, Dramaticstatic, in August. The car was heavily modified and an absolute blast to drive. I know now that I will not own another car that fast for quite a long time to come.
I recently bought a 2004 M3 with 10.5k miles on it. Coming back to the german car arena is like a drink of cool water from my 1991 MR2. Don't get me wrong, I love the Toyota, and it will remain in the stable as a commuter and occasional summer fair weather car. The new M3 is phenomenal, the power is unbelievable and the SMG gets you effortless shifting to exactly the right point in the powerband at all times. The way it handles is night and day from the S4; it's so much more compliant through turns. However, I am really missing the AWD when I apply a little too much power (sooo easy to do) in a turn and the rear end gets fishy on me, resulting in a madly blinking DSC light on the dash. I do miss the S4 interior, the red lights and cool elegance of my sport packaged S4 are definitely lacking in the M3. The interior is still very shiek, but just not as pleasing as the Audi (as so many have said).
Engine sound is great on the new M3, but I'm still getting used to the rasp. The sound of the S4 with LaBree DPs and a Neuspeed G2 cat-back was just heavenly under WOT, but a bit too loud for me overall. The ride with the S4 OEM wheels/H&R street C/Os/Neuspeed rear sway was strangely even a bit more comfortable than the M3 on stock 19s with no suspension mods. I definitely think the ride needs some work.
Overall, you all have wonderful cars, and I still miss the old S4. Oh to be wealthy enough to afford both...
Mobil 1 spoken for. Thanks!

Similar observation here re: AWD. I've recently been driving with DSC off, sport button on and.....
SMG mode #6. (You do know there is a 6th mode that magically appears when you turn DSC off.)
The DSC is waaaay too sensative. The car performs much better with it off.
Just be careful because you can spin the car easily if not paying attention..
Also, don't forget to try launch control at least once or twice, it's good for a laugh!
Lastly, I ordered the UUC Rasp-X - it completely removes the rasp - no power gains but the sound gets much better. You can mate it up with the stock muffler. You may want to check it out.

Thanks for the tips. I think I might just leave DSC on until it gets warmer next spring
I'm not used to these tires yet (stock Mich PSes) and I'm not exactly sure where the break point is. When I really get into it I'll switch that off. I've been using S4 most of the time for normal-brisk driving. Now I have to learn to left-foot brake to take advantage of that great brake pedal.
Interesting re: rasp-X. Best price and where to buy?

I'm getting mine from Renn-Art outside of Chicago. It's $950.
Contact Joe Bustamante (he's one of the owners) - he's a really nice guy.<ul><li><a href="http://www.renn-art.com/renn-art.com-asp/exhaust.asp?cat=e46">http://www.renn-art.com/renn-art.com-asp/exhaust.asp?cat=e46</a</li></ul>
