What is the acceptable mileage range on the odometer when I take delivery on...
a 2001 S4 that I ordered. The car is being built for me to take ownership, so the mileage on it should be minimal right? Less than 20-25 miles? If not, why?

In some states there are laws about how high the milage can be and have the car still sold as new.
Someone told me it was 100 here in MA, but I'm not sure if that's true, or what the average for that is across the country.
If its being built for you, just tell the dealer you don't want anyone test driving it. Mine had 9 miles on it when I got there. I put another 50 on it before I actually bought it.
I'd certainly throw a fit if I specifically ordered a car and it had more than maybe 10-20 miles on it, because then I know they're B.S'ing me if they tell me that no one else has been driving it.

My car had 29 miles. Your car will be driven by the techs during PDI, and again by the car jockey to fill it with gas.
I'd be more concerned (especially if you are ordering a dark colored car like black or santorin) that the dealer doesn't get swirl marks in the paint when they do the PDI wash. If I had to do it again, I'd ask that they not wash it.

Mine started with 9 when I first saw it, 24 when I took delivery (partly my own test drive)
I was rather lucky that my S4 was originally slated for another person, but they backed out. I had the luck of impeccable timing!

to find out the mileage from the factory...
...check with the service dept for the records on the new car. They should have recorded the mileage when "PDI" (pre-delivery inspection) was performed. Any additional mileage is a result of testdrives.
S4 owners look at your old service recipes. They should list previous service and mileage.

Despite the commentary...
having sold audis for 6 years, I can tell you they will sometimes come in w/just under 100 miles on them. This is a result of Audi being one of the few remaining mfr's who still randomly selects vehicles for road tests. Another little known fact... an Audi's odometer can be reset to 0 up to 3 times by a tech as long as it is under 100 miles. Bet you never knew....but don't worry-it is standard procedure at evry store I know not to test drive sold vehicles. Good luck with yuor new Audi. Happy driving.
