Default some think that the stock like setup (including the rs4 box) is not the best for the flow.
hopefully our "mad scientists" here (a hand full of them) can chime in

Default with FI, the issue isn't really "free flow" but rather what gets you the MAF readings your ECU likes
the TINIEST change in intake can move your MAF reading around like crazy (yes, given the SAME mass airflow, the MAF sensor can read radically different numbers)
