Use a pre-wax cleaner (i.e., a polish) which by default will improve your shine and will remove all existing wax from your car. It's made for automotive finishes, and won't hurt the paint.

Try P21S Gloss Enhancing Paintwork Cleanser, or Meguiars Medallion Paint Cleanser for All Paint.

It's unlikely that diswashing soap would directly ruin a paint job. It is quite adept at stripping off any wax, which in turn exposes your paint to the elements.

I wash my car with Dawn when I'm doing a pre-waxing wash -- make sure I am starting with a nice, fresh base.

Just make sure it's a soft one. And don't try to brush your teeth with it afterwards!
