what causes turbo lag?
#3
Turbo lag is just the time it takes for the exhaust pulses to spin the turbo up to speed so that . .
it can make pressure out of the cold side and into the engine. Bigger the turbo, the more the lag as 1) a larger exhaust channel means the gases are going at a lower velocity and 2) the heavier wheels of a larger turbo take more exhaust to get going. I would say that the S4 with stock turbos has virtually no lag. Once we start getting into K04s and such, it might show up.
Rally cars us a "bang-bang" systems that retards timing and dumps fuel in to over come this (the late spark ingites the fuel as it exits the engine and this late explosion gives the turbo energy while the driver is out of the throttle, which keeps the turbo spinning so the boost is instaneous when he gets back into it).
