What is the difference between 0W-30 and 0W-40? My manual says use 30 but some people use 40.

Default Everyboy's got their theory. My manual says 0W-30, so that's what I use. Amsoil is the best IMHO.

You probably can't go wrong with Mobil-1 0W-40 and a few others (such as Redline and Royal Purple I think) since it seems that so many people here on AudiWorld use and recommend them, but I've chosen to stick with Amsoil Series 2000 0W-30.<ul><li><a href="http://www.amsoil.com/products/tso.html">http://www.amsoil.com/products/tso.html</a</li></ul>

Default I've got an '00 S4 built 9/99. Manual says 10W-30. That's the M1 I've used since the beginning....

Recommendations are covered in the manual for driving conditions...not any room for theories and opinions. It's a serious matter. Heavier oils take longer to lubricate on start-up.

Default So do I. You might want to check yours again. 5w40 is the recommendation in mine...

...and the other weights were listed "if 5w40 was not available".

Default Latest info from the people who engineered and built your car.

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/46293/s401oilviscosityperownersmanual.jpg"></center><p>0W-30 is factory fill and 1st choice for all temp ranges. The others are only recommended in lieu of not being able to procure the 1st choice. Forget the theories, go with factory recommendations. Period.

I think there's only one 0w30 (Amsoil?) on the market that is A2 or A3 though.

Default Per the manual, only one spec is 'singly' needed to qualify.

Mobil 1 0W-30 meets SJ and is cheap at most Walmarts.<ul><li><a href="http://www.mobil.fi/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil1_0W-30.asp">http://www.mobil.fi/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil1_0W-30.asp</a</li></ul>

Yeah, but it sure gives insight to what characteristics were important...

The language of the viscosity recommendation/qualifiers seems very black and white to me.

Default Well, that may be the latest, but not what they wrote in 1999 for my S4.

Besides, I have experienced lifter valve ticking with two different brands/weights of 0w/5w30 (Mobil One and Royal Purple).

Perhaps all the money lost by AG in turbo warranty reimbursement prompted the change in the latest.

Quick Reply: What is the difference between 0W-30 and 0W-40? My manual says use 30 but some people use 40.
