I don't think there's any difference besides the name....Quattro=Audi : 4motion=VW

Default No its very different. 4Motion is more like the "quattro" on the TT... which isn't real quattro.

Its basically 2WD that can transfer some power to the rear when conditions merit.

True quattro is full time 50/50.

Default There can be....

B5 chassis cars (A4/S4 and passats) are "quattro" (torsen center diff)

where as the true "4motion" (Mk4 Golf/GTI/Jettas in Europe; as well as the TT) are haldex clutch setups

I believe the 4motion setup is predominantly FWD until slip occurs, then sends more power out back (the exact opposite of, say a Porsche AWD system)

Default Ah, but the Passat uses Torsen and the TT uses Haldex...

yet both are still called 4motion and quattro respectively.

So there are two different systems, but the 4motion/quattro naming doesn't differentiate between them. That's just the brand specific (VW vs. Audi) naming.

Default And torsen vs. torsen

Depending on which VW we're talking about.

Passat: Torsen (exact same system as A4/S4 quattro).

GTI (not available in U.S. yet): Haldex, same as TT's quattro.
