What do you guys think? 17x8.5 wheels, should I go with 225/45/17 or 235/40/17?

Default Loud, low grip. MX are far superior.. here's others to consider:

Recommendations assuming you're looking for a budget performance tire.

<a href="http://www.edgeracing.com/tire/708/">Falken GRB FK451</a>
<a href="http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AR4&url=%2Ftires%2Ftires.jsp%3FtireMake%3D BFGoodrich%26tireModel%3Dg-Force%2BT%252FA%2BKDW%2B2">BF Goodrich KDW2</a> (loud, but at least grip)
<a href="http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AR4&url=%2Ftires%2Ftires.jsp%3FtireMake%3D Avon%26tireModel%3DTech%2BM500">Avon Tech M500</a>
<a href="http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AR4&url=%2Ftires%2Ftires.jsp%3FtireMake%3D Sumitomo%26tireModel%3DHTR%2BZ%2BII">Sumitomo HTR Z II</a>
<a href="http://www.edgeracing.com/tire/674/">Falken ST115</a> (quiet, longer wearing, not as much grip as above, yet still decent)

Default Tried that on SSR Comps, front tires sat outside the fender...

Went with 225-45-17 (new style) Azenis. They're every bit as wide as a 235-40-17 and they don't look funny on the car due to the lower sidewall height.

Default Bah...

I've been through 2 set's of 195/55/15's on a different car, whoop *** grip compared to the Ecsta 711's on there previosly. If you keep them rotated, you won't have the tire noise issue either...

Default 255/40/17..........

no problem with some fender mods. I'm at 25" up front and ran these at Lime Rock today with no issues.

Pictured above are 255/40/17 on 17 x 8.5 ET34.

Of course, if you're scared to do anything to make it fit, stretch a 225/45 on there........

Default Anything bigger than stock is gonna rub if you're lowered.

Just gotta suck it up and take the time to make it fit, otherwise, stay with 225.
