what does it mean whent he traction control light and ABS light come on at the same time?

It probably left a DTC, VAG it.

Mine both came on and stayed when my MAF went bad..

I have hybrid valves, the lights only come on between shifts, but not all the time.

Default Vag it - you need to know the DTC. With my car it was a faulty brake switch.
With others it was the MAF. Where in Chicago are you. I have a vag tool and work in Bucktown - live in the near West burbs.

Default You either have a bad MAF or boost leak
but sinne you got 2001, I say most likely you have a boost leak, check your TTB, BPV and the intercool hose
