What kind of effects could a slowly leaking oil pump cause?

Besides a mess, assuming oil never dropped low enough to even have to top it off...

I thought the oil pump is inside the sump so leakage would be contained in the sump.

Then how come there's oil sludge outside the motor?

Oil pan gasket, front or rear crankshaft oil seal, loose oil filter, etc.
