Default Less chance of hydroplaning as less water needs to be dispersed.

Obviously if the pavement is just damp, it wouldn't make much difference, but if it's raining, narrower (assuming same tread depth and pattern) is going to allow better control at higher speeds.

IMO, 225 is too skinny for 8.5.

Default An S4 does not have enough ground clearance to worry about deep snow, so narrower tires

will make little difference IMO.

I agree.. Rolled fender + 255/35/18 IMO.. but if he doesn't want to roll or rub, 225s.

Default You're kidding, right?! LOL! Even with a lowered car, it makes a big difference.

I have experience with both, I assume you do too then?

Default I have had 225's, 235's, and now 255's (two winters on these so far, on third winter now) on my S4.

I really do not see any significant differences and I do alot of skiing.

Default I noticed differences even between 195 and 215. You must not drive agressively enough in the snow.

For reference, it makes the most difference in heavier snow, and especially slush.

If it's the really light powdery snow, I could see less of a difference.

FWIW, the entire tire industry as well as rally teams agree narrower is better in the snow.

Kind of strange you didn't notice. It was blatantly obvious to me the first time I drove in the snow going from a worn out 195 to a more agressive and new 215. That's saying a lot.
