Default Tire Rack puts round pieces of cardboard on both sides of the tire...

and then wraps the wheel in plastic straps. (so the rims are covered by card board, but the tread of the tire is open...Get the idea?) It seems to work well. I have had 3 sets of rims and tires sent to me like that and they all showed up perfect.

Default They also put a piece of soft material (styrofoam-like) inbetween the wheel & cardboard circles so

that the cardboard doesn't scratch the wheels. Personally, I'd do this and then put each wheel/tire in a box with shipping peanuts. I really don't like the idea of tires just hanging-out in the wind for the UPS guys to roll around -- who knows what it rolled over by the time they get to you.

Default i would box them individually

not because they would be less easily damaged otherwise, but because UPS managed to roll away with one of my wheels. then again i shipped them out from NYC... UPS covered replacement, but it was an inconvenience. if shipped unboxed, make sure each wheel has a shipping its own shipping tag.
