I disagree...our trunks are very well sealed.
I would regard an 8" as inadequate, 10" as adequate, and 12" as more than adequate, and possibly impractical. Then again, it depends on the driver you choose. A well chosen 8" sub may do the trick, but by and large, you'll find more suitable 10" subs that are up to the task, than you will 8" subs.

I had them in my 3K VR4...
1 amplified 8" and another 8" slaved...Matched the system perfectly!
I gave them my bro, but since he hasn't installed them I'm thinking about taking them back. My only fear is that the trunk is pretty tight (in terms of the seal) so that the sound wouldn't travel...
I'll post if I ever get it done.
