What's the longest someone's gone before timing belt change?

Just do it. I changed mine at 80k since the water pump and thermostat are schedule at that time. My mechanic said I had probably 5k more miles until the belt snapped. You could see part of it already starting to come apart.

just had mine changed @ 74k...and my funds are tight too...i dont know your financial situation but i paid 850 for the full timing belt kit installed at KMD tuning...your gonna be kicking yourself in the *** if the belt breaks...on a sidenote, many break without premature signs of failure

My 81 4000 has 249K and I don't think the belt has been changed. The car had 135K when I bought it years ago. But, it is a non- interference engine and if it breaks I'll have it towed home and fix it. Local driving only is required. VW 4 cyl engine.
