Default Wheel fitment question . . .

Yesterday I learned that our stock wheels have a 45mm offset...I knew they were 17x7.5.

Will a 17x8 fit with no rubbing problems? I assume the offset should be ~35mm? I'm thinking "brake upgrade" whenever the stock pads wear out, so I'd like to leave enough room for the Stoptech, APR, or other similar calipers.

Default When you get into brake kits like that, you're better off test fitting the wheels you want to see if

they clear. Not all 17" wheels will fit over those brake kits, regardless of offset. Also, clearance is highly dependent on spoke design. Those 17" wheels that do fit, do so by a very small margin. For instance, a 17" Avus or Celebration wheel with a 45mm offset fits over stoptechs. My 17" Oettinger wheel spokes just touch the caliper as you turn the spoke across the edge of the caliper. These wheels have a 35mm offset, and the spokes curve outward, and then back inward (where they will touch).

If there is a wheel you are considering, I would ask people here if they have any experiences with the stoptech kit and those wheels. The tirerack can also tell you if the wheels they carry will fit over the stoptechs. They don't have a database...you have to tell them which wheel you are considering, and I believe they can verify fitment over the stoptechs.

Default Ah . . . sorry I wasn't more clear . . . (more) . . .

We were considering BBS RC's (17x7.5 or 17x8). I guess the offset is still 35mm? It would seem that Stoptechs might fit behind these... Not sure, though. If I buy thru TireRack, then it's 17x8, if I buy thru the dealer, then it's 17x7.5.

Default I read that a day or two ago, and it doesn't make sense . . .

Why would having different offsets harm anything? For example, VW used 16x6.5ET42 wheels on my GTI GLX. They continue to offer those while at the same time they are selling cars with 17x7.5ET35 wheels.

I'm not talking about different offsets on wheels of the same width, but rather lowering the offset slightly as the wheel becomes wider. Hence the above example. I've done this with my GTI over the past 3 years with no ill effects.

Maybe I'll read that article a second time...

Default I would shy away from the 7.5" wheel.

It's highly unlikely that it will fit. If you can test fit one of them first, by all means, try it. If you don't have the ability to test fit, I wouldn't waste your time with them.

See what the tire rack says. If memory serves, the name of the person there that would be able to verify fitments is Craig Donnelly?? Try that name and see if it pans out. If not, call Eddie from the Wheel and tire forum. He'll be able to sort things out for you.

Default Lets us use an extreme example.

If you new wheel sticks out too much or have a very low offset value, then the point of rotaion is changed, from either in the middle of the tire to the inside.

Okay, I understand that, but is it *really* detrimental to change offset by +/- 5-10mm *if* you're also making the wheel wider?

Default That I'll have to leave it to the experts.

I think yes. If you had a 8.5 wide wheels 235 will make a difference compare to 225.

Just a little change will make lots of difference in that part of the car.
