I do the same thing. I place a thin sheet of plastic backed with foam over the face. Then a thin sheet of styrofoam on top of that. The nature of the wheel is that it needs protection from hard external hits but you don't have to worry about it breaking inside. It isn't fragile.
One of my pet peeves is people not packing things right. And this is a big problem with the aftermarket industry. So I'm really glad you went to the trouble of making this post! :-)
