Wheel Shopping - Tirerack recommends 225/40/18's for 18x8.5 rims...?

really depends on the tire...225/40-18 S-03s are fine w/my 18x8.5" CHs
S-03s are wider in the equivalent width than other makes
my 225/40-18 S-03s on 18x8.5 BS CHs

and for comparison here are Paul Lambert's 255/35-18 S-03s on his 18x8.5 HRE 547s

Ack...I have 245/35/18 Toyo T1-S on a lowered car with BBS CH 18x8.5 rims...I rolled fenders
Like someone said..it all depends on:
1) Actual tire dimensions (a 225/40/18 with one manufacturer can be considerably different from a 225/40/18 with another manufacturer)
2) Wheel widths (I have had from 7.5 to 8.5 widths on my S4...it all depends on what you have on your car...some 18X8.5s will fit...others may rub no matter what tire you get)
3) Wheel offset (many wheels will fit with one size tire...but not with others..)
4) Car lowered or not..if so..how much? This has a great bearing on the issue. Some wheel/tire combos fit fine on stock suspension cars..but with lowered cars..they rub like the devil.
The thing is..you need to find someone who has the exact wheel tire combo you want to consider...with approximately the same suspension...that is the ONLY true way you can tell if something is gonna fit.
One option is to ask tire rack to send you one wheel or tire ..or both..to try it out...that way you can see...and btw, make sure you check fitment on the front AND the back...something might fit fine on one end of the car..and not on the other. The last thing you need is a bunch of expensive wheels and tires that do not fit your car.
Anyway..that is my 2 cents worth....

This totally depends on the tire. 225 is not always the same width across all the tires...
I have 235 18s on my Fikse (an 8.5" width rim), and the "rim protector) is in-line with the rim edge.
I don't know how you squeezed the 255 in there, but I had to roll my fenders/cut liner to make sure the Michelin's didn't rub with the fender or the liner.
The effective offset is 35.45mm after adding the 10mm spacer to the Fikse.
Go figure.
BTW, on the other hand, my 225 Kumho Ecsta V700 look "wider" on the 8.5" SSR Comps. The sidewalls are more square though.
