Default Wheel upgrades. 17" or 18"?

As I'm sure, most S4 owners will opt for dedicated summer and winter tires. At that time, perhaps an upgrade in wheels will also be considered. Just out of speculation, anybody thinking of putting on 18"s? Just thought about that today while driving to work on my 17"s and hit a big pothole. Would like to have 18s i've had my share of bent rims.

Default What are you trying to accomplish with 18"?

More road harshness with 18. My 17"er give me all the harshness I want over the 16 sports I had. I do not want any more.

Also unless I miss read your posting you seem to imply that 18" wheels are stronger. I think it is the other way around. They can not handle potholes better.

Default Explanation...

Since we all have to wait, I've just been contemplating some of the first mods I would make. Definitely, 18s aren't going to give me a better ride but it is a consideration being that I am already looking to put on different rims.
BTW, 18s aren't necessarily going to give you a bone chattering ride as long as the suspension is designed to handle bad roads. Yes, they are less forgiving (less tire profile and hence less air to cushion) but structural components play just as an important role. Hopefully, the S4 has the right components to allow such an upgrade. Remember, it is only a consideration :-)

Does anyone have a definitive answer to how wide a tire can be put on the S4?
I would like to put on Goodyear Eagel F1 Steel 245/45ZR17.
What do you think?

Default Don't think tire width will be as much a factor as you're wheel offset...

don't know if you're planning to put those 245s on the stock Avus rims or not. Best thing to do is check the stock car and then check to see how much space you have between the upper control arm and the inside shoulder of the tire. I know that the putting on 225s on the stock 16" on the A4 is really really close (not worth really trying to put 245s on) And if the S4s suspension geometry is like that of the A4, then it could pose a problem. One question: Why F1s? Have you tested them?

I've driven performance cars running on Dunlop, Bridgestone, Michelin, Yokohama, & Goodyear.
For me, the Goodyears have always given me the best feedback & grip.
The F1 is new enough that I haven't run on it yet; but if Goodyear tells me that this is their current best (which they have), that's good enough for me.
Personal opinion: Dunlop & Bridgestone make a pretty good performance tire.
Michelin & Yokohama use too hard of a rubber compound, so wet traction sucks.
