Default No, wheels are left on the car.

Do NOT bring your car to the dealer with your "nice" rims on the car. If you have winter wheels, or something else, put those on the car prior to alignment. Both myself and a local friend have had problems with the local dealer and their techs using the Hunter alignment machine. Apparently the rigs they attach to the wheels leave small scratches on the wheels, even if they are careful. Carelessness usually leaves behind deeper scratches.

drive car on rack
hook alignment heads to wheels
let machine take measurements
follow computer guided instructions
to make computer suggested changes
remove alignment heads from wheels
drive car off rack

Default I wouldn't recommend that if you want optimum alignment...

...unless you have wheels/tires that are in excellent condition to swap in. It can cause some error in alignment. When I had my car first aligned one of my tires were badly worn. The alignment person was telling me he can try and compensate but ideally the wheels/tires that you will be doing most of your driving should be the ones on during the process.

Default True... we've done alignments with different tires (same wheels!)

and had as much as .5 degree of camber difference.

Is there a large risk of the machine clamps scratching the wheels??

I most cases will i risk getting the wheels scratched? Went through hell getting one of my BBS rims repainted thanks to a dealer test drive.

Default My dealer wouldn't even do the alignment with my BBS wheels

he said that he would have to have my stock wheels because it might scratch the wheels and they didn't want to pay for new ones. They charged me $40 to change from my BBS to my stock wheels, what a rip off.

Default Depends on who's doing your alignment and how

We do our own alignments manually, so no problems there.

With alignment racks, scratches are dependent on the care the technician is taking. You can't get an alignment on a rack without them attaching some device to your wheel, so there's always some risk, but a careful tech will not damage wheels. Always go to a reputable shop.
