When measuring the lock nut distance on the tie rod end, what am I measuring?
Sorry for the slew of questions; this is my first time doing this.
Th tech section article by Chris Haigh says to "measure the distance from the back of the tie rod to the lock nut." I take it he doesn't mean this literally. It seems there's nothing to measure.
On the other hand, the article on the Rocky Mtn. Club B5 forum says to "measure the distance up the thread that the stock TRE (tie rod end) goes into the tie rod." This seems to be more sensible to me.
As usual, thanks for the help!

Count number of turns (threads) to disengage old part. Engage new part with equal number --->
---> of turns. If aftermarket, compensate for engagement with turns (threads) for difference in length to center of ball joint.

I measured from
Like Von said..and I also measured the distance between the 22mm bolt on the boot side...to the center of the tie rod end (the circular part)..it was about 4 1/4 or 4 3/8". I need something better to measure with next time...
