What kind did you get? I can't find this stuff anywhere in DFW. Everyone here says Mobil1 5w40 is the factory fill, but Mobil doesn't even list it on their website. Help! TIA.

They tell you that you can use 10w30 if 5W40 isn't available....unless you're living in a very cold climate, 10W30 is fine.
I also noticed in skimming the manual that they really don't specify that you _should_ use a specific viscosity (though, at first read, I too had the impression that 5W40 was "the" recommended grade), and in fact leave the selection of the viscosity as they should; dependent upon climate:
"Engine oils are graded according to their viscosity. The proper grade to be used in your engine depends on existing climatic or seasonal conditions."
So, unless it gets _really_ cold where you live, 10W30 is fine until your first oil change. I'm planning on switching to either a 20W50 or 10W30 synthetic at around 6000 miles and not looking back...5W40 makes more sense in Germany (although I'm really surprised that they didn't go for a 5W30), but not in the southern US! :-)<p>'00 S4

10W30 won't hurt anything, though, especially at this time of year (unless you live in Alaska :-)<p>'00 S4

5w40 Mobil 1 delvac is available at most heavy truck and auto parts stores. But, that is primarily a european designation as it fails the USEPA energy con. stds. 5w30 mobil1 exceeds all Audi requirements for ANY N.American climate. (the 5w30 rating curve in the manual is conventional not syn.)

I can't find the specific manual weights and agree that for the southern US, thicker oil is acceptable, just be aware that on cold days, 20w-50 can get really thick and then it just sits there congealed in your pan instead of around the bearing and in the turbos where you want it.
I would love the hear a ligitamate explanation of why you should not run synth from first oil change on, I have heard people to say that you should run dino for the first or several first changes but oils job is to do three things:
Lubricate
Carry away dirt and debris to the filter
Maintain viscosity
Based on that, who cares what its origin (man or dino) as long as it does the above effectively.

1) it lubricates better; turbos run at 50-100K+ rpms (this will also help it to run at lower temperatures, which will affect (2).
2) it has _much_ more resistance to thermal & viscosity breakdown; turbo motors produce hotter oil temperatures.
(This is based upon my ongoing research on turbo motors and oil...)
HOWEVER, from what I've heard, it is best to wait at least several thousand miles before switching, to allow the seals in the engine to seat properly, which apparently they do better with dino juice.<p>'00 S4
