Why aren't the gear ratios of an auto and manual the same?

...they were, by the time you factored in the final drive ratios:
Manual (Automatic)
13.6:1 (13.7:1)
7.56:1 (7.46:1)
5.06:1 (5.25:1)
3.67:1 (3.73:1)
3.07:1 (2.77:1)
The only substantial difference is the 5th gear, where the automatic is geared taller for better fuel mileage and more comfortable cruising since it can easily downshift to 4th should it need to accelerate.

For those acceleration junkies.
Gear 6spd Tip Tip w/4.11
1st 3.50(14.39) 3.67(12.86) 15.06
2nd 1.89(7.77) 2.00(7.02) 8.22
3rd 1.23(5.06) 1.41(4.95) 5.80
4th 0.97(3.97) 1.00(3.51) 4.11
5th 0.81(3.31) 0.74(2.60) 3.05
6th 0.68(2.81)
Hmmm would the tip then out-accelerate a 6spd? Interesting....
