why is it common for K03 to blow? STFA but didnt really come up the the answer besides
no proper cool down and warm ups. are there other reasons? Is it because of the build quality? or is it because it is limited to the amount of boost it can handle? TIA.

overspooling to match the boost requested by the tuner's chips, apparently some oil return line...
troubles in the MY 2000's (not sure about this actually), oil lines very close to the manifold (pass side), improper warmup/cooldown, chance....no FOD I don't think.
all that comes to mind
edit: and boost leaks 8^)

and the sample size of K04's out there is far less as well :o)
but still, we have heard of people blowing K03's in all sorts of different situations, yet I don't know of any definite K04 failure, though I'm sure they are out there as well. I'd think SilverBullet has gone through his share.

Ya overspooling takes out a single blade.. not. Manufacturing defect number 1 reason
Lubrication system design or lack there of is probably reason #2. Which can also be emphasized by the factory monkeys crimping the oil lines upon intallation.

it's the oil delivery, particularly to the passenger turbo, I think
note that K03s are also used in the 1.8T in the A4 and the TT-180, and it's exceedingly rare for the turbos in those engines to blow. The S4 has more heat issues, coupled with the very suspect oil line to the passenger turbo. It's generally the passenger turbo that goes on the S4, remember.
The K04 is probably a more robust turbo, but I bet correcting the oil line issue (on either K03 or K04) would go a long way towards preventing failure.
Also, most people aren't pushing the K04 as hard; it's rated for more boost, and the Stage 3 kits run much more within the K04's envelope than the stage 1/2 tuning does within the K03's envelope. But *stock* turbo failures really only seem to happen with the K03s in the S4; it's very rare for a stock TT or A4 to have a turbo fail (K03 or K04). That's why I think the oil line is relevant.
