Why do my control arms/tie rods/suspension only make noise occassionally?

Driving home from the office today, the squeaking/clunking was audible over my radio. About an hour into the commute, after stopping to get gas, the noise went away and was quiet for the rest of the trip. Road conditions didn't change at all, so I don't get what would make the noise come and go.
The noise is coming from the passenger side. When I push straight down on the fender - nothing. When I push into the fender from the side (horizontally), I can replicate the noise.
Does this make sense?

all at the same time. Not everything catastrophically fails at once.
I don't have a specific engineering reason to why your control arms make noises at weird times. All that matters is they are making noises and that's the precursor to you shoveling out a lot of money for new ones.
