I saw that the 2001 S4 recieved horrible ratings in the recent issue of Consumer Reports. I can understand the engine issues, which can be prevented (or at least delayed), but what about the electrical and tranmission ratings. They didn't specify the TIP or the 6-speed. They all got a black rating, the worst possible.
I take these reports with a grain of salt. I've known them to be flat wrong in the past. Are the ratings based on cost, frequency, both? Would a Metro having the same problems recieve the same rating? Statistics can be misleading.

CR prescribes honda accords, bose loudspeakers, and the Britax Companion car seat (the most unsafe your $ can buy for your little guys).
high five.
I f'in love it when people smugly point out Audi's CR ratings as compared to their sensible honda or toyota (with the optional lobotomy)... I'm usually abliged to regale them with tales of the S4 making over 300hp for ~150k *****-out miles.

I think in 2000 CR named the 2.7t as one of the 5 worse motors! The one they tested must have had a boost leak and it surely wasn't a stage III!!

and retard dealer service depts...
audi has these brilliant engineers building these excellent machines on one side of the pipeline... and then moronic management in the middle... and a *pitiful* dealer network in the NA market...
i mean, christ... americans think audis are expensive VWs... and when one takes the chance on an Audi b/c of it's brilliant design... they're rewarded by horrendous dealer service and incompetent mechanics who don't understand their vehicle.
