why does my car burn so much oil it seems everytime i check it i need to add is this normal?

Default I thought I read somewhere that 1 qt. per 1000 miles is considered normal.
I've put in a quart so far and I've run 4500 miles.

1 qt. between oil changes might be considered normal.

my old vr6 burned 1 qt every 1500. I was told spec was 1 qt every 750.

If you burned one quart ever 750 miles you'd be out of oil in 5000 miles. No way that is correct.
