Why is there such a giant backorder for intercoolers at awe???

They perform just as well as AWE without shrouds and should have much lower IAT's with shrouds.

Unfortunately, it is not an off-the-shelf core from any intercooler manufacturer. We have 4 different suppliers of this core, and they *still* cannot produce them in a timely or predictable fashion for us.
I am constantly trying new sources for the cores, but most core manufacturers are not able to produce cores to our standards. Most of them use a low grade method of assembly, resulting in a high leakage rate. We do a final QC check on all cores after assembly, and a supplier who makes leaky ones costs us a lot of labor. You cannot test pre-assembly due to the way welding heat affects the end plate adhesion.
Bottom line: there are a lot of crappy intercooler core manufacturers out there, and the good ones have long and unpredictable lead times that screw with our production scheduling.
