Wierdest thing about my broken hood latch-
I broke the little rubber coated hook that sticks out of the grill about 18 months ago. Bought a new one from Clairparts and stuck in on my shelf to let it age for a year and a half. Finally got around to replacing it last week. Other than misreading the torque values of in-lbs as foot-lbs (realized this just before the bolts sheared), it's the easiest repair I've ever done.
Wierd part is after I get the old one off and look at it, it's not broken anymore!! I can't believe my eyes. I look at the new one and I haven't mixed them up - they're both fine!
What happened?
1. I am senile; I actually fixed it last year, forgot that I did, bought a second latch and tried fixing it again. It has been 18 months after all.
2. When I took it in for routine service last year, the dealer noticed it was broken and didn't think it was worth bothering me to ask for permission or to tell me they fixed it. They figured it'd be a nice surprise when I finally noticed.
3. Someone broke into the garage, noticed the latch was broken and replaced it. He/she also adjusted my shifter, bled the brakes, and changed the oil before leaving with my golf clubs, tools, computer, and stereo.
4. Friends thought it would be a funny practical joke. OK - so confess.

Sure, especially if they thought they broke it.

No, I definitely broke it by slamming the hood down
with the latch in some wierd position. I was very confused when I realized it was no longer broken. I also can't believe my dealer would fix it without telling me, I've not been impressed with their service dept(like many around here).
Now I've got a brand new (18 month old actually) hood latch mechanism for sale.
