Yeah, I imagine there are "mutts" out there just like with the B5 S4 transition from '01 to '01.5...
When I bought my '98.5 A4, there was another on the lot with '1998' as the model year on the sticker and, other than the 30-valve 2.8 and mechanical/drivetrain changes, it was identical to the 1997 model year in and out (including the football badge). That car, along with my '96 A4 (itself different from '97+), was what I based the Tech article on.
