detonation, rather than having less, since the latter implies detonation is occurring. Cooler burning yes since there is less energy released from ethanol than gasoline, but more even burning? Unless detonation occurs I expect how 'even' the burn is between the two is very similar, determined predominantly by how well the mix of air/fuel happens.
On your last point, I don't think it is just exhaust gas energy that is of question, the lower combustion temps will directly impact power production since cylinder pressure results from the temperature rise caused by the fuel burning. The timing 'gain' is one means, along with dumping in more fuel, to try and get the cylinder pressure back up to where (or beyond) it would have been with gasoline.
