Default Would a vacuum leak cause my brake pedal to get REALLY firm if I don't drive it

for a few days?
I noticed this when I was in Boston for a few days. Got it to start it up and pedal was really firm. Once I started the car it felt normal again.
It almost feels like if your car stalls and there is no power booster assisting.

My thinking is that by not driving it for a few days the vacuum is leaking out slowly somewhere making the brakes feel like this.

Yes, could be a defective check valve going to the brake booster.

Default Thanks, i'll check that out. May also be the source of my miss fires. Nothing major

just at idle. Seems to be more when I am on the brakes. hmmm...

Default i had that, and misfires on idle when cold, needed new cyl head

turned out audi had messed up timing belt in past, and inlet valves were slightly bent on one cylinder => loss of inlet vacumn at startup...

my one way valve at bulkhead was knacked too, cheap to buy and easy to fix, do that first

if you have leaking inlet valves you will see a loss of vacumn on a boost guage ie at idle, do that next

Good to know, I hope audi replaced the head at their expense.

Default aye right....

long story

audi changed belt at 80k

car changed hands

auxilary belt went at 85k, and timing belt got knocked "out one tooth" (of belt)

garage the guy had just bought it off reluctantly "fixed it" ie put old belt back one notch. it ran.

last owner sold it in disgust

i bought it from a non audi car dealer at 90k. changed timing belt.

at 107k misfires at idle when cold, manifold vacumn absent, low compression cyl 2 ie leaking inlet valves

took it apart myself, untorqued bolts, in particular on the cam sprocket on the head that had not been touched since audi were there at 80k, so i reckon a combination of bad luck (auxilary belt went, possibly not replaced at 80k when off) and inability to torque the 2 most important bolts (cam sprockets) led to slight valve bending at 85k. took a while to show but i cant see how else they got bent, and i know the rest of the cars history

?1000 for head (cant get a recon for 16 2.7t heads dont know why not) and ?100 for gaskets etc

at least i know its fixed properly now, 120k...

unlikely to be able to prove anything in court so left it
