Xenon auto leveling not working it appears... could use some help please
I have an '01 Avant that seems to have an issue with the Xenon's not leveling. I guess it's really worse than that... they seem to point down so the beam does not project much. This happens to both lights at the same time. Sometimes they are fine and other times it seems as if the beams are focused in an extreme down position...
Any idea where I can start looking to resolve this? Have you heard of anything like this? I searched the archives and couldn't find anything specific to this.
Thanks very much
Matt

read the codes with the vagcom, see what error you get
reaclibrate them, then check the wheel sensors if the recal doesnt work. if that doesnt work do a recal but dont complete it, it will center your beams until you get the sensors replaced. I have been driving like this for awhile, naver had time to replace the sensor, dont see any super rush to fix it since the lights are aimed straight.

more
Part is cheap, like 40 bucks delivered from genuine audi parts or similar, closer to 80 from dealer. Just remove driver side wheel and the sensor is right there. Takes 10 minutes.
If you have VAG, check and see if you have a short to ground or something error for the xenons.
You can see the sensor connected to the CA's. Most likey just one of them went bad on you. I did this like 3 days ago.

I had the same problem...
My lights would sometimes go to their normal position, then drop back down. This happened both while stopped or while driving. My car was still under CPO. I went to the dealer over 10 times and they could not permanently fix the problem!! The first time they replaced one of the sensors and everything worked for 6 months. The second time they "reset" the system and the lights worked for a few months. The third and subsequent times they could not fix it.
I VAGcom'd the sensors for a couple of hours. The readings never got out of range and yet the lights dropped down while driving. If you research the system, they are only supposed to adjust while stopped (<1km/hr).
I tried many things, including resetting the system. I tried disconnecting the control module under the right side of the rear seat. However this immediately drops the lights, probably as a "safe" default position for oncoming drivers. I suspect that there is a loose connection between this control module and the lights, and when the connection is broken, the lights drop. I also believe that when the lights drop, the motors that control the lights continue to run for some time. At some point the left light stopped moving up and down, I believe the motor burned out, but I cannot confirm this. The dealer replaced it under warranty.
My "permanent" solution is to remove the fuse to the entire system. I simply waited until the lights were in a "normal" position, removed the fuse, then checked/adjusted the alignment.
I'd love to hear if you can fix your lights or what you try. I'll be checking this thread. Also, please let me know if there is anything I can do. Together, we may be able to solve the problem. My car is no longer under CPO, so more trips to the dealer are out of the question!

psst : push that exhaust clamp upwards (~45*) so it will not hook crap on the road ;)
