How does the APR unit work from an end-user's point of view? Does it have to be installed by a mechanic? Should it be removed if the car is brought in for warranty service?

They flash your existing ECU, so there is nothing to "remove" technically. You can have it reflashed to stock before you take it into the dealer if you want.

Same thing here bud. Especially when in Dynamic and slowing down. very very herky jerky. I can brace for it but it never sounds good and I feel like it's creating long term damage. My passengers don't find it pleasant either. Very violent experience in my opinion.

Are there any chance that Audi itself will release the software update to fix it?

Didn't fix it for me.

The update did definitely help with other aspects of shifting, but my 3 to 2 shift in Dynamic mode is just as violent as before at times. In all fairness though, I do think that the jerky shifts may be slightly less frequent after having the update.

I read in one of the posts that a transmission adaptation was done and that helped. Did they do that on your car? My car is also very jerky on the 3-2 downshift in Dynamic mode, but I haven't yet been in for my 5K service.

I had this update 3 month ago. It didn't change much to be honest. Plus I have another strange effect - when I release break pedal (while car is still lets say in traffic) it shakes like if it was lacking idle revs or wanting to conk out.
