Default Where are you mounting your radar detector?

I'm looking at the different options for placing the radar detector in my car. However, due to the slope of the windshield when I place my escort high up near the top console, it sticks really far out. It feels like it is only a couple inches from my face. I'm thinking about placing it lower, right in front of my mirror but where I can see the display.

What have you guys done?

For many years on my BMW I kept my Valentine 1 suction-cupped to the windshield above the rearview mirror, on the passenger side of the mirror stalk. I used a hard wire cable into the dome light so there were no wires hanging. It's a great spot because the higher you place the detector, the better the reception.

This, except on the drivers side above mirror. Also have the stealth display mounted inside the upper portion of my dash.

SubterFUSE is spot on. You want it as high as possible for optimal line-of-sight detection. I have my Passport 9500ix up, to the right of the rearview mirror. Doesn't bother me at all and the passenger visor goes down almost all the way. No complaints from my wife when she checks herself out in the mirror. I have it hardwired with the Escort SmartCord, so I can mute the detector from the button next to my leg so I don't have to be putting my hand in front of the passneger to mute. I'm pleased with the installation. It took me all of 30 minutes.

That is how I wanted to do it. I was running my 8500 X50 there but the new Escort Max doesn't have the same slim mount and it takes up a lot more room and pushes the detector off the windshield a lot more.

My car is still so new that I haven't even moved the Valentine 1 over to it yet. I will mess around with the placement tonight.

I'll also need to find a wire diagram for the dome light so I can hard wire. Or I might just wait until I take my car to the stereo shop and let them do it.

I'm most likely going to do the Blinder HP-905 jammer, too.

let me know how you like the Escort Max. I thought about upgarding, but other than the display, my 9500ix is just as full-featured including the GPS for red light cameras and storing false alarms. You can order the slim mount for the Max. It's not as sticky probably as the big mount you have, but it'll do the job. Mine has yet to fall down in two months, so it's sticky enough.

There actually isn't a slim mount for the Max. The Max takes a different mount than the previous detectors. The new sticky mount is amazing and this thing will never come down in the Florida sun, but it just causes the Max to be a lot more bulky.

So far I can tell a HUGE difference between the Max and my X50 which had the same radar antenna as the 9500ix sans the GPS. I had the Max in my center console today and it was still picking up signals which is crazy.

I ordered the VR4 Laser Shifter with the Max and plan on having Ultimate Auto install it. I'll probably just see what kind of slim mount they can come up with. Even just a piece of metal which can slide up into the roof would work and mount it high.

I run a quad head LI and v1 I mount my v1 up above my mirror and to the left of it, I have owned my v1 since I was 16 and just update it once a year, did the digital update a few years back.

I also have to agree with all the post above me make sure you mount it nice and high with a clear vision this will help in your laser detection, although unless you have a jammer it is too lake if the laser goes off.
