Default Oil usage 2017 A4 quattro

So I bought my 2017 A4 Quattro November 2016 from a dealer with 8,000 miles on it. They did the 10,000 mile service and gave me a CPO warranty with the vehicle. 300 miles before my service is due, a warning light came on saying I was low on oil. Is that typical of Audi's this new that they use oil? Never seen that before on such a new car. I can't verify what the oil level was when I purchased, but I will certainly make a note of what the level is after my service in 2 weeks and watch it closely. Does this send off alarm bells for anyone on this chat?

You should not be low on oil after only 8,000 miles. First I've heard of any oil issues on the 2017.

Ummm VW/Audi 2.0T engines do tend to burn oil but after a few thousand miles are on the car. I experienced this with a VW CC, after 40K miles the car used to burn oil, not much. My personal mechanic which is considered an Audi/VW/Porsche guru here in Miami usually recommends oil change every 5K because of that issue.

They certainly were notorious for oil issues in the past, but as I said, I've yet to see any other reports that 2017 A4s have issues with excessive oil burning. I personally have had no issues with oil level on my car and I'm at 10,300 miles.

Just to be clear, at 8000 miles the dealer did the 10,000 mile check up early before I bought the car. I am now at 18,000 miles and due for the what would be 20,000 mile check up. I'll certainly watch oil usage on the next 10,000 miles but it does concern me about oil usage. What is the normal level of oil? Should it be mid-level on the oil indicator or is it usually put to the top level on the indicator after a fresh oil change?

Worst case scenario, it burns a quart of oil every 10,000 miles would you consider trading for another vehicle. We put 20k on a vehicle a year?

This engine is known for its oil consumption. My wife's 4 cylinder '15 Q5 consumes close to 1 qt over the 10k mile interval. I haven't given it a 2nd thought.

just picked up a CPO 2017 A4 quattro with 2.0 S-Line package. Just checked oil level and it is down about 1/4 of a quart. Since it was CPO they "allegedly" changed the oil. So assuming they did, I have now gone 700 miles with at least 50% in sport mode an pushing starts off red lights. OK I pushed the engine a bit but it is kind of supposed to be other wise why get the car. So I am a still a bit concerned to burn that much oil this quickly (again assuming they changed and filled the oil correctly). Maybe they did not change oil at CPO (but they are supposed) and that I am still running on previous service interval which I am not sure when it happened
Have to keep an eye on the situation
Dealer told me when they change it they use 5w40 Castrol Full Synthetic which is what I will use to top it off. then measure in another 1,000 miles

Without a certain starting point, it's hard to reach a conclusion. Top it off to a known level and then start monitoring it.

Manufacturers typically put very high consumption rates as "normal" to avoid warranty issues. My old M5 (and most BMW M cars) was considered "normal" at up to 1 quart per 6-700 miles.

The 2017 A4 owner's manual says

The engine oil consumption may be up to 0.5 quart per 600 miles (0.5 liter/1,000 km), depending on driving style and operating conditions.
Unless you're in excess of that, you're unlikely to get any type of warranty coverage.

I haven't had mine long enough to check consumption on mine - only that it didn't need any before my one 10K service at 40K. (My M5 would need at quart at 7-8K later in its life - 200K+ miles)

Wow, you are right on it, because I just topped it off with .5 quart and like I said I only went 700 miles. I have never owned a car that had that kind of oil consumption. I just got rid of a 2009 Corolla and it didn't even burn .25 of a quart between 6,000 mile oil changes on an engine with over 100k miles. Also unloaded my daughters Honda 2006 Civic with 110k miles and it didn't burn any oil between oil changes at all. So how could ..5 a quart per 600 miles be even remotely acceptable to any engineer or company that makes a vehicle. That is pretty mind boggling and if it turns out to be true for my Audi I will dump this car in the spring as it is ridiculous and unheard of to burn that kind of oil. The only engines I know that burn that kind of oil were 2 stroke boat engines. Thought I was buying better engineering then .5 quart per 600 miles.
Anyway it is topped off and maybe this is all for nothing. I will see in the next 600 or 700 miles and then make my decision to junk this car which would be unfortunate because everything else is awesome ...handling, virtual cockpit, style, acceleration, etc..

Because every incremental amount more than that would cost them in warranty repairs - pricey ones.

I suspect that if you got one of their engine design engineers on a lie detector, he/she would agree that it's not acceptable. But they don't make those calls.

This level of consumption certainly isn't the norm, or we'd be hearing a lot more about it. I think anything more than a single quart between 10K changes, on a widespread basis, would be making a lot of noise on the forums.
