I currently have a 2017 GTI that I really like, but has had multiple problems including repeated coolant leaks from the thermostat/waterpump area. It seems VW keeps replacing the part with another of the same design that has the same issue. I am thinking of replacing it with a B9 A4, probably a 2019. Does the B9 A4 suffer the same fate? Or are the other common coolant leaks to be aware of on this car?

There a several threads you can search on this. Short answer is yes, exactly the same issue.
I have a /18 A4 Quattro. Loses small amount of coolant from reservoir (falls from max to min every 4-5 months). No visible coolant leaks around water pump/thermos but it must be going somewhere. From time to time I smell coolant when I park car in the garage. Next time car is in for service I will ask that the belly pan or whatever it is called be removed to see if it is wet with coolant. I'm still under warranty for through end of term of lease so not worried but really..........why is this an issue with these cars?
Slow coolant leak on my 2013 2.0L was through the seal on the water pump shaft, which you can only detect with a pressure test (it evaporates too fast to pool), but it gradually got worse until I replaced it, and now there is extended warranty for it. My 2017 2.0L also slowly loses coolant (8oz per 7k miles), and it will pass a 10 min pressure test (like the dealer does), but I will do a 24 hr pressure test myself and then scope below the pump for the pink stuff!
Just had mine replaced today, they assured me that they have now updated the design of the part so this issue shouldnt occur again. I can only hope they are correct...
Had that leak at 33K miles on my '17 A4. That's the only issue in the 40K I put on the car before lease ended and I switched to an S4. Here's the warranty repair with replacement part numbers if this helps.
This is all covered under warranty correct, even CPO warranty? I am starting to notice a coolant smell when I get out of the car and would rather be proactive before this issue leaves me stranded. I had a 16' GTi that had this same issue. It was the 'Coolant Flange'. An $11 part that cost me $250 to have fixed.
