looking at the oil change requirements on the new B9s, and I see that they now require a brand-new oil spec, VW 508/509 which is a specially-designed, low-metallic, long-life oil standard rated for 15-20,000km usage. There are a few oil manufacturers meeting the standard now 3-4 years after the fact, but still the primary brand in North America at least is Castrol EDGE Professional 0W20 Long Life IV.
How do you go about verifying the correct 0W20 508/509 oil was used in a change? I understand that the Castrol oil has a UV dye contained in it, so it should glow when exposed to a blacklight? Do all oils on this standard require the dye, or is it just a Castrol thing? I had to have an oil change done at a VW dealer during a road trip, and.. you know.. 'trust but verify'.. I don't know if any VWs actually require this oil yet, so how can I confirm they didn't cheap-out on the Audi passing through and put in plain old Castrol Syntec like a 10 year-old Golf?

There's VWs that use the oil our B9 cars use. I know because that's where I get mine. The local VW has the exact same 0W-20 508/509 oil quart jug (part #GE525771LDSP ) that my local Audi dealership does, but slightly cheaper.
The Castrol EDGE Professional 0W20 Long Life IV is the OE dealer oil and AFAIK the only one with the mystery dye that is useless to anyone except a dealer looking to void a warranty for incorrect oil type usage.

Motul SPECIFIC 508 00 509 00 0W-20
Another one to add to the approved oil list: TOTALQUARTZ INEO LONG LIFE 0W-20 with ART is designed to meet the SAE 0W-20 viscosity grade requirement of European vehicles and is particularly purposed for use in the VW group vehicles, requiring the very specific VW 508.00/509.00.
The Castrol EDGE Professional 0W20 Long Life IV is the OE dealer oil.......
It is the same oil as the one I listed. VW/Audi partners with Castrol and rebrands it for VW and Audi to sell at the dealers.
That way people come in for service!
I did actually pick up a case-worth of 0W20 Long Life IV at another VW dealer along the way today, so that is slightly more reassuring but the work order from the oil change doesn't explicitly specify it, so I still need to figure out how to test the oil that's actually in the car. Like I said, I hope it reacts to a standard blacklight so I can just siphon a small amount and check it.

New, the required oil is essentially green. Only motor oil I have seen that is that hue/color.

That's nice to know, but in North America about the only brand that will be consistently available across the US and Canada is Castrol. 2+ years after release in production cars, even Mobil1 is essentially a US-only product, and other 'international' brands like Shell, Liqui Moly or Valvoline are nowhere to be found except occasional local VW repair shops. I found a couple of these on Amazon.com, and other online auto shops, but they all ended up being as expensive or worse than buying a case of 1L bottles from a dealer.
