Default 55TFSI E Alternator/Starter-Generator

Hey everyone! I am looking to buy my dream car in the next few weeks. A 2021 Audi A6 C8 55TFSI E. I was doing a little research and inevitably bumped into the alternator/starter-generator problems on the Mild Hybrid models. Was curious if this is a known problem on the PHEV models as well or if those have any other common similar electrical issues that I should be aware of. I hope you all have a great day! Thank you!

I think that all "50" and "55" models of the C8 have the 48v electrical system, which would therefore include your proposed purchase. Whilst there is undoubtedly an issue with the BSG and Audi has recognised that by now fitting a revised unit, both in production and when doing a replacement), remember that forums like this tend to highlight problems more prominently than they may actually be. People don't come on here and post saying "drove the car today and nothing went wrong"! Also a major issue at the outset was that Audi had not anticipated that the unit would fail and therefore had not built up a stock of replacement parts, also the BSGs were being built in Ukraine. This meant that when they started to fail in numbers there were no replacements available. If one fails now it will be replaced with the new design and they are also fairly quickly available.

I thought the PHEV models have a 381V system instead of the 48V of the MHEV models. I might be wrong and look in the wrong direction to be fair. I am not that experienced at all on the matter.

My understanding (and I full appreciate I may be wrong) is that the hybrid system is totally separate to the system running ancillary functions, but I guess if it does not need a 48v battery then it will not need the 48v BSG and could then just use the 12v BSG used on Audis with lesser engines. It will still need some sort of generator to charge up the 12v battery required for engine starting etc. The in-vehicle charging of the hybrid system is done by the hybrid drive motor during braking/overrun not by a BSG (a BSG capable of delivering 400v would be quite a size!). Maybe try and look at Erwin to see what the part number for the starter motor/BSG is on the different engine options

There is no traditional alternator / starter on the TFSIe models, there is no accessory belt on these engines. The electric motor thats in the gearbox acts as both a starter and an alternator when needed. I have the A6 55 TFSIe and its been a great car so far.

I have a 55 TFSI E Sedan, 2021 model. Love the car, drives great, is faster than most things you meet on european roads and just looks amazing.
However, when I got mine, the AC was already broken, and because the AC runs on the electrical system, this was an expensive fix (€1700 for just the ac unit itself).

Haven't had any issues with a starter motor or anything yet though.
