They're usually quick and helpful. I haven't really shopped around, but when I built desktops, they had some of the best prices around.

pressing a button to recover is as simple as it gets.
If you need new memory/hard drive you could do it yourself..
IBM has step by step service guides and troubleshooting tools online. Takes $50 and < 20mins to replace. You'll needto reload the OS on a new drive.
You could always take it into a BestBuy or CCity (they have prices listed on web for services)
Also, Buying a NEW(Refurbished) Laptop may save you money vs taking it in to a repair shop.
IBM has Cert Used Thinkpads T40/41/42/43 with warranty starting under $400 and T60/61 for $700+
You can find New T60/61 from Lenovo for $600 via promo code/outlet.

You can open/run/display recovered files on the drive using the demos... you have to pay for a key <$100 to actually recover the files from the bad drive and move them to a good one. I can try it sunday if you bring the drive

Data Recovery Software - Hard Drive & File System Utilities

I build networks for a living and have lost data in the past. There is a company in Marietta GA that is excellant at recovering data. Call "Cherry Systems" and I am sure that they can assist you.
