Default My S4 got a piggy back on Saturday into the dealership. : < (alternator or v-belt?)

Here is what happened...

Driving around today and my battery light popped up in the trip display. (At first I was like, I just got a battery 4 months ago and now it is dead?) Well, then driving around I noticed that my volt meter was going South very fast and was almost to 8. The cars airconditioning stopped, then the radio and lastly the guages (tach/speedo). The car totally went into limp mode and I coasted into a parking lot where I awaitied Audi roadside for 30 minutes (not too long).

I inspected the v-belt and it was still intact. All I can think it might have been is one of the pulleys is damaged and the alternator was not working at all.

Any insight or advise is much appreciated. Thanks!

Default Hmmm. My belt pulley tensioner came off xmas eve 2002. Same symptoms.

Of course you say your V-belt is in tact.

Pouring rain along I-75 around Ocala, FL. Got a flatbed to take me 2hrs down to Reeves Audi in Tampa. Then got a ride to Tampa airport to rent a car. Sucked.

I had the timing belt replaced about a couple of months prior to that. I don't think JE tightened the tensioner enough after putting things back together. That's my theory at least.

Default Alternator Update

It was the alternator and they are replacing it under warranty (luckily I am still stock and not chipped)

The only thing they really said was that they wanted to move some wires around my turbo piping since it is a lot tighter back there. Total cost should be around 100 smackers. : >

BTW - This 1.8T Jetta is actually pretty nice. Itis like driving a Caddy after my car... that is now purchased off lease. Yeah!

Default hummm. where did you find the blind mechanic. :-)

I needed that guy a few months ago when my aftermarket warranty co. dropped me for having a lowered car..... and I was in for a cam seal replacement.

how much is an alternator for our cars anyway?

Default Around $250 rebuilt, $300 new.

That's not from a dealer, where I'm sure they'd be more like $500, just guessing.
