Default Power Steering fluid leak

My 2001 S8 (58K) has suddenly developed a bad power steering fliud leak. What am I in for? Steering unit, Rack & pinion assembly replacement, tie rod, boot? How much do you think the repair may cost? Please be gentle!!

Default Have you looked to see where it is leaking from? Not sure if your car has one but..

I've had to replace the hose clamps going to and from the PS fluid cooler that runs in front of the radiator in both my A4's.

Thanks for answering. I'm in Charleston SC. I have not gotten under yet. But the fluid seems to be leaking near the front passenger's left foot. I checked all the readily accessible and visible areas at the engine - hoses, cooler loop, power steering pump.

Again Thank you

Default Power steering fluid leak

I got under the car last night. Leak appears to be at the rack and pinion on the left side. One pint of fluid only gets me about 5 miles. Needless to say, I've taken the car in for service. It will be next week before they can even look at it. I'm still looking for budget figures on cost if anyone can help. Thank you.

Thank you for your reply. I am in Charleston SC and have taken the car to McDaniel Audi here. Although I've had Autometrics work on my cars for years; McDaniel was much more convenient this time. Tell me more about your S8. I just bought this (2001 - 58,000 miles) a month ago; and had already put over 1500 miles on it before the rack and pinion failed. The estimate for the work is $2400; the replacement rack and pinion assembly is $1040 - which is a lot higher than I see them for on the net. Looking at your telephone number, I assume you're in Atlanta - what part?
