2004 A8L Front Driver Strut gone bad?

2004 A8L Front Driver Strut gone bad?
I've heard that it is almost unheard of a strut going bad. The car still has automatic lift, there is no unnatural dip in the nose of the car but there is a nasty thud type noise in the front left every time I go over uneven road, speed bump, etc. Replace the upper and lower control arms and no improvement. Audi mechanic says I need a complete left front strut (1,600). Thoughts?
