Default A/C problems...

My 2000 TT's AC will sometimes work and sometimes not. It always blows fine, however it will not cool at times. It sounds like something is trying to kick on from the compressor. When it works, it's VERY cold and fine. It works about half of the time. Any thoughts? Your help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much for your response. That's what I was afraid of. :-( Any ideas on good places to get parts? I'm new to the Audi world.

Default You should check your A/C charge level 1st

Low pressure could cause the same symptoms. You could have a slow leak in a hose, connector, evap or compressor.

Default he said it blows frosty when it works and then cuts out 100%. Either 100% or 0 from what he

describes. That would have to be the compressor controls taking a dump. The compressor is mechanical so it works, but the clutch controls the on/off function. There is also a pressure sensor which can be faulty. This sensor prevents the compressor from coming on if system pressure is low. That usually need to be near empty for that to shut the compressor down. So even a low system will keep running; however if the sensor is bad, it'll cut the compressor off. Could be intermittent.

I'm going to get the charge level checked first--I bought this car a few months ago--I'm not sure if it has ever been charged.

I'll also check the pressure sensor. It would be a welcome relief if that was the only problem.

Thanks so much. I'll let you all know!

Default Try this

You can do some diagnostics directly from the AC control unit.

AC Diagnostics

Default Re: Try this

THANK YOU!

Here's what I got... and this makes perfect sense. If the switch stays open the compressor remains off.

22.1 (F118) A/C Refrigerant High Pressure Switch, static open, *22.1 (see below)
*22.1 Compressor remains off until switch closes

We checked the A/C Refrigerant levels and they were normal...

Any thoughts?

Default First thing to try would be to replace the high pressure switch

If that doesn't work you have a restriction in your system that is keeping the pressure too high. A likely place to look for a restriction is the expansion valve.
