Default Houston Homeowners: The state's appraisal value of my Loft has gone up...

by $26,900, which means my property taxes will be higher for 2004. Has anyone successfully protested an increased state appraisal before? What was involved? What kind of info did you need to provide?

Thanks.

Default Harris County appraises your property, not the state...

...if you're really not overvalued (i.e., comparable market sales are not lower than your valuation), you can contest the valuation based on the fact that you are assessed higher than comparable properties to yours are assessed (i.e., the similar 1-story homes around my house are assessed at $110psf, but I'm being assessed at $114psf, so in that situation, I've successfully contested my $114psf valuation to get it lowered to $110psf). Do you have a homestead exemption claimed on your loft (and you should if you don't have another house)? If so, then you would have a percentage increase cap on your taxable valuation (i.e., they could say your home went from $300k to $400k in value, but you'd only pay taxes on an increase from $300k to $330k -- I think it is a 10% cap).

Default I have the Homestead exemption.

Where can I find county appraised values for other properties in my area? Is this data I can get from the tax assessor's office?
