Default Re: i hate to say this, but from experiance, go to AUDI..........

Hell, this car gets a dealer service or oil change every 5000 miles. I generally tell them what it needs, they tell me if I missed anything, they fix.

This one stumps me, but it may never happen again..

Default Sounds like a a similar problem I had. Here were my findings >>

My GTI was having a intermittent starting/running issues.

After scanning the car with a Vag-Com, I got this error code (no CEL though)

16705 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): Intermittent Signal

If there is no signal or intermittent signal from this sensor, the ECU will not let the car start or run.

You mentioned you have a 2002, so your part number is probably: 06A906433L
Please confirm the part# by entering your vin in the ETKA (or have the parts guy do it)before you buy it.

Default only seen 2 engine speed sensors fail on a 1.8>>>

both of which the car would not start at all...like it was fuel starved more than no compression...it is possible that it could be intermittent...

Default Good point. the 'wouldn't start' and the 'moved 10ft' had me thinking it was shutting down.

3 engine speed sensors, if you count mine. lol.

Default Mine was intermittent when it failed but it was heat related. Get the car hot and it wouldn't start

With winter temps, or first thing in the morning it would have been fine, right up until the point it completely failed.

I'm thinking a sensor or possibly an ECU/sensor interface fault due to insufficient runn time-over the miles I've noticed a cold start with shutdown within 30 seconds can cause odd starting-just never quite like this.

Working fine now-but maybe it is diesel time.
