Default 2000 TT 180 Turbo Question

I own the above mentioned car, and after say 10 or 15 minutes of hard driving (110mph+, including high rpm 5000+), should it be necessary to let the turbo cool before turning the engine off?

Default Depends on how you drive the last few miles before stopping.

I have only let the car run after a hard drive if I don't drive at "normal" speeds for a few miles before shutdown. That is the basic rule for any turbo, not just our K03.

If you are driving like that then coming to a stop within a minute or two, pop the hood, let the car idle for a few minutes and you are good to go.

What the technical reason behind this? My understanding is that there is oil that cools down the metal components of the turbo to reduce fail of those components. So what happens if I don't let the engine cool down, what is going to weardown and/or break?

Default The turbo is being cooled by both oil and water . . .

the oil is being used to both lubricate as well as cool the turbo. The water is doing most of the cooling. Once the engine shuts off this stops, so if you keep the car running the fluids will continue to cool off the car. When the car is under boost the turbo is spinning at ~100,000 rpm, when it is idling the turbo is spinning at ~14,000 rpm. Quite a difference in rpm alone!

The cool down is also to reduce the chance of coking in the turbo, which is basically a build up of sludge which can form.

You don't have to do this, but it can't hurt. I am not saying I do this all of the time. On a daily basis, I never do this. I generally have a nice 5-15 minute drive to get back to my house and that leaves more than enough time for my turbo to cool down.

If I am stuck in traffic I will generally pop the hood and allow the car to cool down before shutdown.

You can always install a turbo timer and it will do all of this for you. They usually keep the car running for 3 minutes and then shut the car off. A nice cheap insurance policy The 225 has a water pump that kicks on after shutdown, which is basically a turbo timer.

Default I probably shouldn't enter this territory, but...

So you mean to tell me that all of that cooing, clicking and purring after I park is just some cooling doo-hickey????

I've got to say, I'm a little crestfallen - I thought my little Black Raven beauty was expressing affection... You know, like a "come back here and drive me some more silly man, who else can make you grin like that???" Or, maybe, I thought the car was just sighin' and pinin' for wide-open spaces and back country roads...

Hmmmmm, maybe my analyst was right about nme reading too much into things. Either way, after this little discovery, he's gonna be one rich SOB.

Dismayed - rTTexas
