I am guessing that with the manual top you have to drop the rear wind deflector first then raise the top. With the power top the defector lowers as the top goes up. Very helpful while sitting at a light trying to keep my BB interior dry during a cloud burst.

problem is you can't reach back and over the glass to reach the handle, so you have to lower that first, unless you are outside the car and just grab the roof to raise it - I believe if the car is running, it will drop the windscreen anyway.

because there is nothing controlling the speed in a manual top I am not sure how it would make sure the deflector lowered so that it would clear the top.
Anyone out there have a manual and could answer this?

as I say I can't recall the sequence exactly, but I believe if the key is out, and I raise top manually (from the outside to allow me to reach it if the glass is up) I can do so and the glass screeen stays in place. I've defintely noticed driving it that way a few times. Anyway, the top doesn't physically conflict with it.
