The problem is a defect. Those who try to say it's the wrong transmission fluid or whatever are wrong. That's why I've been advising against purchase of the FWD. I also recognize that many have not experienced this, put it's obvious that there's a problem.

Should I add you to the list? Here it is:

When my hard drive died, I lost a few entries, but this is as updated as I could get it. Add an additional 100 or so VW owners with the identical problem and identical transmission. Again, these are reports from forum members only, not all U.S. TT owners.

Here's the most up to date list of FWD TT transmission problems. There was a period of time where I was not documenting the problem, so I believe that I could now add an additional 30+ names to this list.

Don't compare these numbers to the total number of TTs sold, but rather to TT.Org forum participants as of August. Another reason for this is that some here seem to think that my tranny problem was just isolated bad luck. I think that it is something more. Anyway, here's a partial documentation of some of these problems.

1. MattC 6-25-99. 2nd gear synchro problems. Transmission replaced.

2. Brad Willis 7-24-99. 2nd gear synchro problems. Transmission replaced.

3. Brad Willis 8-7-99. 2nd gear synchro AGAIN. Appears transmission will have to be replaced for a second time.

4. Kurt 6-25-99. 2nd gear synchro problem. Transmission replaced.

5. Sai 6-25-99. Said that his dealer replaced the tranny of a non forum member.

6. Sai 7-26-99. He is now experiencing transmission problems. Tranny "clanks" when shifting into 2nd gear (probable 2nd gear syncro problem).

7. Hal 6-15-99. Problems getting transmission into 2 gears.

8. Jay 6-14-99. 1st and 2nd gear problems requiring multiple attempts to engage transmission.

9. Steve Mikula Service Manager of Don McGill Audi. 2 non-forum member TTs in at the same time getting transmission replaced.

10. TToby 6-25-99. Said his friend is an Audi mechanic who had already replaced "several" TT transmissions. TToby then searched local dealerships for a TT demo to drive. He found one, but the dealer said., "you can sit in it, but that's it, because the transmission's broken."

Identical to everyone else. Haven't taken it in yet, still have warranty left. If they replace the transmission I just hope it fixes it the first time.

And get some specifics about what IS being done NOW to address this problem..

The dealers usually start by saying they can't reproduce the problem. Then they'll either say the same thing again, and/or replace the transmission oil. Next, they'll adjust the linkages.

When that doesn't work, the transmission will be replaced one or more times. Once the transmission is replaced, it will usually be okay for awhile and you'll feel good, like just maybe they've licked the problem. Then you'll hear it grinding again, and you'll want to scream.

You may get one more new tranny, and when that doesn't work, they'll tell you that they can't recreate the grinds, and everything seems okay. If you scream loud enough, you'll talk to the Audi Regional Tech Rep, who will tell you that there is no problem, and perhaps it's just your driving style.

From here, the only solution is the Lemon Law.
They may replace the tranny again, and/

I had a FWD and a TT-Q. I had the second gear grinding problem. One of my cars now is a Jetta V6 stick. Guess what? It grinds in second gear JUST LIKE MY FWD TT. Hmmm. Sounds like it's a common part between the two cars, -and they share the same problem.

My 2000 AWD TT's transmission completely failed the yesterday. I was driving along at about 50 when suddenly it seemed as if my transmission was filled with gravel. With an extremely painful grinding, my car stopped, only to be towed off 2 hours later. They said that there was a 2 1/2 inch hole out of the side of the transmission. They are completely replacing the trasmission at no cost.
