Default Advice needed... doing coolant flush

Ran car til fan ran, heat on so core flowing. Drained coolant, purged with air through the overflow tank. Refilled with distilled water through the overflow, and only took a little less than a gal. Ran car for some time without cap on, so no pressure, heat on to circulate through core. Got some air bubbles, but car took a while to get up to op temp. Sounds kinda like i'm getting a little boiling somewhere that I can hear through the tank. Temp gauge went up to first mark above middle, but fan never kicked in.
I'm pretty sure I have an air lock somewhere. May have worked itself out while I've been searching forum. Think I'll go back out and re-drain the distilled water and blow it out again.

Are you supposed to refill through the expansion tank, or is there a regular cap on the radiator under the plastic pieces across the front?

if there is, should I leave this cap off until there are no more bubbles and then top off via the overflow tank? Any thoughts on getting rid of air blocks?
Thanks,
Fig
PS, the drain petcock is really cool once you figure out how to work it :&gt

Default I know this sounds cheap..

but for 50$ bucks I have my dealer do it. ITs cheaper than me doing more or less, and its hassle free...I dont think theres a cap under there..expansion tank only.

Default I called Curry's and they wanted $154!!

From the post info I got, sounded like it was a piece of cake, so I decided I'd try it.
Pulled the top panels off, doesn't seem to be any other way to get stuff into the radiator.
Let it sit for a while, and I think the air block cleared, as I was able to go run it again and get the bottom hose to heat up, and the fans to run.
drained the distilled water, getting ready to go add the 50/50 mix. Keep your fingers crossed...

Default well if your dollar keeps sliding

much more, gonna be about equal. Makes shopping south of the border pretty good these days, Just bought a Fortis watch and saved almost 1500 bucks over buying it here.

Default OK, this discussion about having some else do it isn't helping...

anyone got anything constructive to add now that I'm already in the project?

Default Re: Advice needed... doing coolant flush

fignewton,

Unfortunately, the person who provided you a quote of $154 neglected to inform you of the benefits vs. cost. The price includes the parts and labor to flush the cooling system using a BG Coolant Machine which completely replaces all the old fluid with new coolant. A drain and fill, for instance, leaves up to 1/3 of the old coolant in the system (thus contaminating the new fluid when its introduced). FYI, we charge $59 for a drain and fill too. Sorry for the confusion.

Regards, Bill Shaw
