but technically I live in the South bay (work in Campbell, way the heck down there..)
The two-plate idea is cool, I'll have to find a way to set that up so I can quickly swap them when needed.
How much would an extra plate cover (stock bumper insert) cost?

I might screw them in using the existing holes in the bodywork and then cover up the screws (or use black ones) we'll see.
What I might do is get some thin mangets and try that so it would feel more secure (ie won't get nicked)

Meem,
goto my fotki and look up the 3.2 coupe reg pictures and the last ones (with the euro plate). Select the "hires" option and you can see the bumper lining up with the fender

After my front panel got dinged by the braille parker, I had my insert out for about two months and I had my European plate with black plastic surround bent slightly to fit the contours of the insert reveal opening and firmly stuck in place with double sided tape from 3M. It worked fine and went through the Shell Auto wash in Marin weekly when I fuel up and it did not fall out. When I was ready to install my new plain and painted front panel I removed the Euro plate and put the new panel in place.

I used some ss black screws. My plate was a Berlin plate and had two holes already in it. I initially used the "special" plate holder, which I also screwed in, then placed the plate into it. I didn't worry too much about the drilling, as the plate or oem cover will hide the holes, and there isn't anything behind there to mess up.
I didn't like the plate holder because it stuck out way too much, and made the plate slightly lower, ruining the lines. So, I just screwed the plate directly into the bumper.
Here's a few pics, you can see that the plate is flush, and the four screws are nicely integrated - two are at the ends, another is located right after the B where a hole had been, and the fourth is screwed into the second "3", hidden in the black.

These were the only pics that I have, sorry about the "extras" in the pics. ;-)
